When you have a toothache, you need relief fast, but tooth pain is not always going to arrive when the dentist is open or when you have the time to take off for an appointment. You can schedule a visit to your favorite Sandy UT dentist, but in the meantime, here are 7 tips for managing your toothache.
- Brush and Floss
This may seem like a logical suggestion, and it could be hurtful, but it will help in the end. One of the most common things that occur when you get a toothache is lodged food between teeth or just under the gums. Using a soft toothbrush and gentle floss will help before your pain escalates. You may not want to brush and floss after every meal, but you should try as many times as you can stand it while in pain.
- A Saltwater Rinse
To give yourself a little relief, mix a solution of one cup of warm, not hot, water and half a teaspoon of salt. Swish or gargle the mixture around in your mouth for approximately 10 seconds and then spit it out. Be careful not to swallow the mixture as it will make you ill. Repeat until the mixture is gone. You can do this several times a day so that your tooth and gums feel better before reaching the dentist for a permanent solution.

- Apply Ice
To numb the pain, you can apply ice to the tooth that hurts. Be sure to use a barrier between the ice and your tooth or skin. Use a washcloth or other type of fabric to hold a small bag of ice for no more than 15 minutes on the affected area. You can repeat it about every two to three hours.
- A Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse
Mix one part hydrogen peroxide of 3 percent with three parts waters. Switch this solution around your mouth for about 15 seconds before spitting it out. Be careful not to swallow this because it will make you sick. The antibacterial properties will help with any infection in your mouth before you can get professional help from the dentist.
- Reduce Inflammation
Taking an OTC like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen will help reduce the inflammation and relieve the pain in your mouth. Be careful not to take more than the directions before seeing a dentist for a permanent solution.
- Try Garlic
Garlic has been used for medicinal purposes for hundreds of millions of years. Garlic contains allicin, an antibacterial solution. Use a fresh, crushed clove of garlic with a small amount of salt and apply directly to your sore tooth.

- Try Thyme
Another spice that could be helpful because of its strong antibacterial properties is thyme. Use an essential oil instead of a fresh spice. It will be easier to apply to the affected area. Use a cotton swab or a cotton ball for application.
If after trying all these methods and your pain is still severe, contact your dentist for an exam and permanent treatment.
