HERPES VIRUS – MORPHOLOGY, RESISTANCE, CLASSIFICATION & DESCRIPTION OF VARIOUS HERPES VIRUSES

INTRODUCTION TO HERPES VIRUS

⇒ HERPES VIRUS is the family of viruses, contains hundreds of viruses, maximum of which infects humans.

They are characterized by their ability to establish latent infections, enabling the virus to persist indefinitely within the hosts and to undergo periodic reactivation.

MORPHOLOGY OF HERPES VIRUS

Herpes virus is spherical & enveloped virus containing icosahedral capsid.

The capsid is composed of 162 capsomers & envelope carries surface glycoprotein spikes.

Size: 100-200 nm in diameter.

Genetic Material:- Linear dsDNA.

RESISTANCE SHOWN BY HERPES VIRUS

Herpes viruses are susceptible to fat solvents like Alcohol, Ether, Chloroform and Bile Salts.

They are heat labile and must be stored at -70°C

CLASSIFICATION OF HERPES VIRUS

There are about Eight different types of Herpes viruses known whose primary hosts are humans. They have been officially designated ‘Human Herpes virus types 1-8’ but their common names continue to be in general use, except for 6 & 7. These viruses are as follows: –
