BIOCHEMICAL TESTS FOR STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS (S. aureus)

There are so many biochemical tests for Staphylococcus aureus, the well known causative agent of localized suppurative lesions. However, only a few reactions are most commonly used and are medically important for distinguishing pathogenic staphylococcus i.e. S. aureus from other non- pathogenic Staphylococci which are as follows:

Beta hemolysis on Blood agar

⇒ Golden yellow pigment production

⇒ Coagulase production

⇒ Mannitol Fermentation

⇒ Gelatin liquefaction

⇒ Phosphatase production

⇒ Deoxyribonuclease (DNase) production

⇒ Tellurite reduction

LABORATORY DIAGNOSIS OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS

Staphylococcus aureus and other species of staphylococci ferment various sugars producing acid without gas.

However, these sugar fermentation tests are of no diagnostic value in routine laboratory tests except Mannitol fermentation which is of great importance in differentiating Staphylococcus aureus which is mannitol positive from other non-pathogenic Staphylococci, especially from Staphylococcus epidermidis.

The various other sugar fermentation tests are of great importance in research work and for knowledge:
