The CBD market explosion
There have been 1000+ new CBD brands created in 2019 in the United States.
With the explosion of new products on the market, it can be just about impossible for people to know which companies are invested in making the best, legitimate CBD products and those looking to make a quick buck off the CBD hype.
There is also a lot of misinformation and lack of regulation in the CBD space.
The University of Pennsylvania published a 2017 study that has a very concerning diagnosis for the CBD market.
Their conclusion was that 70 percent of CBD products are not what they claim to be.
They can contain much less or much more CBD than advertised, test hot (having THC when the label says THC-Free), or have pesticides and residual solvents from poor manufacturing processes.
Take a second to think about what you have seen or been told regarding CBD. Do the claims made by the manufacturer seem like they are selling snake oil?
Or what about advertisements from your friend or neighbor that they have the absolute top CBD brand and it will cure every ailment?
What if there was a company out there that rigorously tests the thousands of CBD products in a scientific laboratory for you and maintained transparency without all the BS?
How do you find the best CBD products available?
TruPotency.com was created to shed light on the CBD industry and ascertain the safest, highest-quality, and most effective CBD oil.
Our team started to research and analyze how to sift through the crowd to find the best CBD oils and other products because we have personal experience with a full spectrum of CBD products, from excellent to very poor.
We know the effectiveness of high-grade CBD products in our everyday lives. Getting to the bottom of this question is as much a personal endeavor for our team as it is our company mission.
Prior to establishing TruPotency.com, we tested over 250 products with our independent laboratory partners. We spent tens of thousands of dollars on advanced analytical testing procedures.
After seeing the results we were astonished to find fewer than 50 products passed our stringent standards of having correctly labeled CBD amount, no THC when stated, and no chemical contaminants.
This percent of passing products is surprisingly similar to the results released by the University of Pennsylvania.
Now our CBD product data bank from laboratory testing has grown and so has our grasp of the CBD and cannabinoid testing realm.
We have now expanded our number of labs we test with to include multiple ISO certified labs from Florida to California with even more brands and products.
As of November 2019, we have received over 700 products only 60 have made it onto Trupotency.com for sale as safe and properly advertised (so far!).
An alarming story on our testing journey
If a laboratory test comes back to us with a result that shows a product is correctly labeled, does this mean a product is actually good? And if we have a negative finding, does that mean that the product is actually bad?
The truth might be somewhat troubling to grasp. A certificate of analysis for CBD lab testing should be consistent for a product from batch to batch and testing lab to the testing lab, but we have found that is not the case.
We had a sample analyzed from a very credible brand to a testing lab (we’ll call it Lab A) and Lab A results indicated that sample contained slightly over half of the labeled CBD concentration.
Since the company whose product we had analyzed is very reputable, we asked Lab A to run the test again and we also sent another sample of the product, from the exact same bottle to a different analytical laboratory as well (we’ll call this one Lab B).
Lab A sent us a new certificate of analysis with results that indicated a CBD concentration almost three times greater than their first lab results and almost two times greater than the labeled claim.
After analyzing the results from the certificate of analysis Lab B sent us, we saw that the numbers confirmed the label CBD amount.
So, the issues become trying to identify which of these results is the “real” answer to how much CBD is in the product.
Since a brand can have its products reanalyzed after the first round of results are not desirable, then how are you supposed to be confident that the results they show you are correct?
What steps need to take place to ensure the CBD products are as claimed?
We at TruPotency are dedicated to making the CBD industry more transparent, but to grow and thrive as an industry cannabis-based products need to be legalized and regulated.
If stringent and consistent testing and manufacturing standards and regulations are put in place, consumers can be assured that the CBD product they use was made with good manufacturing practice and rigorously analyzed in a laboratory.
Demanding rules and regulations are the only way forward that will allow the cannabis and CBD industry to ensure the production of safe and effective products.
A deeper interpretation of results
We make sure CBD products have what the label says, however, we’re also using the laboratory test results in a novel manner.
Our science advisory board — MD’s and Ph.D.’s — are identifying the highest quality CBD products using only the most recent scientific publications.
As of November 2019 there a number of ailments including pain and inflammation, nausea, anxiety, insomnia and more.
Taking these resources with information on clinical trials and scientific studies, we gathered and organized the scientific knowledge about cannabinoids, terpenes, and other ingredients to build an algorithm that helps guide you to products for your needs and to help you better understand why the products are useful for you.
With each product, you can find its cannabinoid and terpene profile that the algorithm utilizes, including links to our laboratory test results for the inquisitive and scientifically minded.
The algorithm we created is novel because we use modern science to analyze the products. So, how does the algorithm do this?
Let’s say a CBD product contains complementary cannabinoids CBC and CBG with terpenes beta-caryophyllene and myrcene at modest levels.
When the algorithm uses this information, we will see that these cannabinoids and terpenes are thought to help with pain relief, then rate the product high for soreness, pain, and inflammation.
CBD is also thought to act synergistically with myrcene to enhance this effect even more. This process is the reason TruPotency is able to guide our customers with real data they actually make sense.
Safety Concerns
Is CBD safe? Clinical Trials have used up to 1500mg of CBD with little to no adverse events. So from that point of view CBD is very safe. However, CBD can inhibit various cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes.
Because the cyp450 enzymes are responsible for a majority of drug metabolism, this can inhibit the breakdown of prescription and over the counter medication.
This will lead to higher blood plasma levels of various drugs that can end up harming the patient. For instance, CBD can inhibit the breakdown of warfarin, a blood thinner, that can be dangerous for individuals.
Bottom Line
CBD and other cannabinoids have great therapeutic potential, but the CBD market has much growing to do (no pun intended).
At TruPotency we plan to continuously laboratory test products to identify and source only the most efficacious CBD products that exist.
No one has been willing to be a watchdog in the wild west that is the CBD market, so we are motivated to take on the role, giving you the confidence that your daily CBD relief is safe and effective.
