5 Facts men must know about Cannabis and Testosterone

Energy, strength, confidence, and sex drive: the qualities that men of a specific age group love to brag about. And all of them originate with the principal male hormone testosterone.

The normal level of testosterone in an average male falls between 300 and 1000 ng per dl of blood.

Studies in JAMA say that men with higher testosterone levels (around 500) have enhanced libido than the ones with low concentrations of testosterone.

While stress, obesity, diseases, endurance exercise, etc. can regulate testosterone count, vaping cannabis too can impinge on the levels positively.

So, here are five remarkable facts men should know about weed and testosterone.

1.) Marijuana Users Have a Higher Level of Testosterone: says a Study in Denmark

A study in Denmark collected data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dated 2011-12 to inspect the association of cannabis use and serum testosterone.

Of the 2376 men who were a part of this study, the unadjusted mean concentration in cannabis smokers was slightly higher than in the men who never used it (3.83 ng per ml against 3.70 ng per ml in the latter one).

The concentration further surged to 4.27 ng per ml in current users.

2.) Harvard Studies show Increased Sperm Count in Males who smoke Marijuana

Contradictory to prior research works that talk at length about the negative effects of marijuana on reproductive health, the Human Reproduction journal published a study on February 5, 2019, listing the astounding link between increased sperm count and weed use.

Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health had researched under Dr. Jorge Chavarro, an associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology in the institute.

From 2000 to 2017, the researchers collected 1143 semen samples from 662 men who, along with their partner, were seeking fertility treatment at the Massachusetts General Hospital Centre.

Along with blood and semen sample analyses, the study required the participants to answer a self-reported questionnaire about lifestyle habits like past and present drug usage including marijuana.

The study noted that 55% of the participants claimed to have smoked pot at some point in their lives.

Out of these 365 men, 11% were current weed smokers. The sperm count per millimeter of ejaculate in these men averaged around 62.7 million.

The number dropped to 45.4 million in never users. The World Health Organization has set the threshold for normal sperm count at 15 million per millimeter.

Interestingly, among men who smoked marijuana, only 5% had a sperm count below the normal limit. The number was higher among non-smokers (12%).

3.) CBD Regulates Stress Levels: a Prime Factor involved in Production of Testosterone

Stress and anxiety are regular occurrences in our fast-paced lives. According to the American Psychological Association, anxiety is an emotion associated with feelings of apprehensive thoughts or physical changes like abnormal blood pressure levels.

It is not unusual to feel anxious on the first day of your office or be nervous before a public performance.

However, when stress and anxiety start interfering with our daily lives, affecting our work and social life and hindering personal growth, it becomes a matter of concern.

It can degrade overall health along with dwindling levels of testosterone. So, mitigating stress should be one of the top priorities of men who seek treatments for improving testosterone levels.

4.) Testosterone Concentrations drop in Physically Unfit Men

Doctors ask men with low levels of testosterone to exercise regularly. High-intensity workout and resistance training are some of the proven methods to upturn the release of testosterone.

A study from Europe supports this point with evidence that physically fit men have better semen parameters than the physically inactive participants.

With the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD and the goodness of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in hemp-CBD products, you can boost your exercise capacity and performance, thereby enhancing testosterone levels.

5.) Male Fertility and the Endocannabinoid System

The researchers at Harvard University used the link between the active compounds found in cannabis and the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to explain their findings.

The ECS is the master system in mammals and invertebrates that is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the animal’s body.

Made up of endogenous cannabinoid ligands, their congeners, transporter proteins, receptors and enzymes for ligand metabolism, the system also plays a chief role in male fertility.

For men with low testosterone levels who want to take the route of natural remedy, doctors recommend a balanced diet, a healthy amount of sleep, losing excess weight, etc.

If you take a closer look, you will find that all these aspects are regulated by the endocannabinoid system.

So, not only there is direct involvement of ECS receptors in testosterone production but also the ECS works in harmony with the reproductive system.

When you smoke cannabis, your body receives a wholesome dose of CBD. Some research works suggest that CBD curtails the production of the steroid hormone cortisol in the adrenal glands.

Now, cortisol and testosterone hormones work with an inverse relation. When the level of any one of them goes down, the other automatically rises.

So, CBD promotes testosterone production indirectly too, by modulating cortisol levels. If you are facing infertility issues, cannabis might as well be your wonder drug.

Who knows? The trick is to start low and go slow. In keeping with this ‘less is more’ approach, you can take marijuana shatter for quicker results.
